Intensive Course on the Study and Performance of Ancient Greek Drama

This Summer School, organised under the auspices of the European Network of Research and Documentation of Performances of Ancient Greek Drama, will be held again this year after a hiatus in 2012. This is good news, despite the late notice (in view of which it may be possible to include students who are not able attend the whole course).

This unique course combines academic and theatrical interests with both theoretical and practical approaches, and integrates attendance at performances.  It will run from 3rd July until 13th July, and will be based at Laurion/Sounion in Attica, moving to Epidaurus for the last three days. The theme this year is Challenging Limits. There will be morning and afternoon sessions, led by well-known European scholars, combined with visits to archaeological sites, attendance at rehearsals and performances.

Students have to organise and pay for their travel to and from Athens, but, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the University of Athens, there will be no participation fee for the participants, and their expenses, (including accommodation, meals, tickets to performances and visits to archaeological sites) will be covered without charge.

Potential applicants should communicate with me (oliver.taplin@classics.ox.ac.uk) as soon as possible. They should normally be engaged on a degree, preferably postgraduate, and should already have a special interest in ancient Greek drama and its performance.  They should also ask their supervisor to send me a brief recommendation under separate cover.
