Title: Urban religion and religious change: intellectualization of
\nreligion and ritual invention<\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/p>\n

The central hypothesis of the newly established International Centre
\nfor Advanced Studies on “Religion and Urbanity” at theMax-Weber-Kolleg
\nin Erfurt is that many features of past and present religions would be
\nmore plausibly viewed as the outcome of specific effects and uses
\nofcity-space and their social and cognitive bases rather than as
\ninherent characteristics of a specific ‘religion’. Many religious
\nphenomena, and especially major religious changes, can be better
\nunderstood by viewing them in spatial terms, that is, as a result of a
\ndialectic of”co-production” (Day) of city-space and urban life, on the
\none side, and religious representations and practices, on the other.
\nTherefore, change is not conceptualized by presupposing religion and
\nthe city as two static entities,but rather implying a “continual
\nprocess in which the urban and the religious reciprocally interact,
\nmutually interlace, producing, defining, and transforming each other”
\n(Lanz). Designating a process in which religion and the urban are
\ninvolved,’urban religion’ is the formula that defines also the state
\nof a religion which is shaped by the interaction with the urban spatial
\nenvironment and which can periodically crystallize into major changes
\nwhose assessment and naming is a responsibility of the
\nscholar. Focusing on changing urban environments against the backdrop
\nof long-termperiodisations such as the Roman empire, the rise of
\nIslam, and the Europeanage of explorations (with the Reformation and
\nthe development of colonialempires), this panel aims to reflect upon
\nforms of connectivity (cooperativeor\/and conflictual) and target
\nreligious dynamism through the lenses of religious intellectualization
\nand ritual invention. These are two kinds of religious changes that
\nappear recurrently in the cross-culturallyentangled, world-wide
\nhistory of religion and urbanism all the way through. How and how far
\nare religious intellectualization and ritual invention madepossible by
\nthe engagement of religious communication “with the conditions
\nof specific urban environments at particular moments in the
\nenvironmental,political, and social histories of cities” (Orsi)?
\nDivided into two subpanels dedicated to intellectualization of religion
\nand ritual invention, respectively,\u00a0 we welcome papers from religious
\nstudies, urban studies, urban history, archaeology and related
\ndisciplines.<\/p>\n
