14th Moisa Research Seminar on Ancient Greek and Roman Music Bressanone/Brixen, 2-6 July 2019

The Moisa Research Seminar will take place from 2 to 6 July 2019 in
Bressanone/Brixen (Italy) with the commitment of Padua University and
of its Department of Cultural Heritage. Following the customary
format, originated in Corfu in 2004 and after five years in Riva del
Garda (Italy) under the auspices of the Arion Society, the programme
will comprise morning sessions devoted to the study of the particular
text as well as a series of evening lectures on other issues of
interest.
In previous years, the texts and topics examined in the morning
sessions have included the Pseudo-Plutarchan De Musica, Music in
Comedy, Music and Women, Music in Plato’s Laws, Aristotle’s Politics,
Athenaeus’ Deipnosophists, the Pseudo-Aristotelian Problems,
Aristoxenus’ Elementa harmonica, Aristoxenian musical handbooks and
Music and Rhetoric in Dionysius of Alicarnassus.
In 2019, we shall focus on Music in Pausanias’ Guide to Greece,
looking especially the traces of ancient music in the ten books
concerning the musical regions and oral tradition. It will be the
first time that Pausanias’ text is analyzed from the musicological
perspective.

We will mostly work on the Loeb edition, Pausanias, ed. by W. H. S.
Jones, London-Cambridge (Mass.), 1954, but additional passages from
other works will be circulated on separate handouts at the seminar.

Italian translation and commentary has been published in the series
“Scrittori greci e latini”, Lorenzo Valla-Mondadori (1982-2017).

The morning seminars (10am–1pm) will be led by Prof. Egert Pöhlmann
(University of Erlangen), Prof. Ian Rutherford (University of
Reading), Prof. Angelo Meriani (University of Salerno), Prof.
Donatella Restani (University of Bologna), and Prof. Daniela Castaldo
(University of Salento).
The afternoons are free for swimming in a wonderful indoor swimming
pool & sauna, sight-seeing, sleeping or further discussion. The
evening lectures, which normally start around 6 pm, provide an
overview of the most recent developments in the thriving field of
ancient Greek and Roman Music, as well as a chance to improve current
projects thanks to the feedback and questions of the audience.
Both the morning sessions and the afternoon meetings will take place
in Padua University’s Casa della Gioventù, near the historic city
centre of Brixen

where the open exchange of ideas that is so typical of, and vital for,
this Seminar will be placed.
Registration and all scientific activities will take place at the
“Casa della Gioventù” Università di Padova” in Bressanone/Brixen, via
Rio Bianco 12. At this university campus there are classrooms, common
space and a little bar in which it is possible to have breakfast and
snack. The “Casa della Gioventù” has 48 beds (including 6 for disabled
students) in double and single rooms (35 euro per person for night for
a bed in double room with two single beds).
