The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London (UCL) is
\nplanning to host an international conference on 22-24 April 2015 on aspects
\nof family law in the Ancient World. We are using the term \u2018family law\u2019 as a
\nconvenient label for the range of legislation by which states seek to
\nregulate the behaviour of \u2018families\u2019 and their members, and to define the
\nboundaries between private and public responsibility for such matters. We
\nare operating with a broad conception of the Ancient World, embracing a
\nrange of Mediterranean and Near and Middle Eastern cultures from the
\nearliest times to late antiquity (including Egyptian, Old and Neo-Assyrian,
\nNew Babylonian, Persian, Ugarit, Alalakh, Greek and Roman).<\/p>\n

Confirmed speakers include: Prof. Sophie D\u00e9mare-Lafont (Paris), Prof. Edward
\nHarris (Durham), Prof. Alberto Maffi (Milan), Prof. Paul Mitchell (UCL),
\nProf. Karen Radner (UCL), Prof. Lene Rubinstein (RHUL), and Prof. Jakub
\nUrbanik (Warsaw).<\/p>\n

Papers (in English, French, German or Italian) will be 20 minutes long, with
\n10 minutes for discussion. We welcome proposals under any of the four broad
\nthemes outlined below.<\/p>\n

Rights and obligations of kinship: legal obligations of parents (including
\n\u2018social parents\u2019 such as guardians or stepparents) on the care and
\nmaintenance of children; legal obligations of children to care for elderly
\nparents; extent of the state\u2019s responsibility for the care and protection of
\nvulnerable family members (e.g. widows, orphans, and the elderly); legal
\nobligations for burial and commemorative rites.<\/p>\n

Marriage\/divorce\/adultery: eligibility for marriage; definitions of incest;
\nprocedures for a legally valid marriage; laws on dowry and marital property;
\ndefinitions and legal consequences of adultery; attitudes to monogamy and
\npolygamy, and to concubinage and other informal relationships; legal
\nprovision and procedures for divorce.<\/p>\n

Bastardy: distinctions between \u2018legitimacy\u2019 and \u2018illegitimacy\u2019 (bastardy);
\nlegal means of controlling or preventing illegitimate births (such as
\nabortion or infanticide); \u2018proof\u2019 of legitimacy in cases of dispute;
\nlegitimation of children who were born illegitimate; legal relationship
\n(including inheritance rights) between illegitimate children and their
\nparents and other members of the birth family; effect of bastardy on civic
\nstatus (citizenship, right to marry, right to own property, etc.).<\/p>\n

Property and inheritance: definitions of individual versus family property;
\ntypes of property that could be inherited; entitlement to own and inherit
\nproperty (including women\u2019s rights); importance of patrilineal succession
\nand male precedence; testamentary freedom; adoption of an heir.<\/p>\n
